EXPANDING THE DESIGN TOOLBOX

The tools architects use both inspire and influence design thinking. Before computer-aided design (CAD), architects had to rely on physical material exploration, mock-up and drawing communication to push the envelope of design capabilities. CAD and subsequently BIM technology has produced an era of design communication and efficiency whose impact impression is debated within the architecture community. Optimistically, CAD has improved the capabilities of which extraordinary design can be further elaborated. Regardless of a design’s complexity, it is difficult to transform concept to reality without proper communication. An effective way of expressing a concept is through physical exploration; the most iconic being the architectural scale model.

Design Proof

In Mosaic’s aims to further pursue design capability through the aid of 3-Dimensional printing. With the technology becoming ever more affordable and user friendly, 3D Printing has the potential to express complex design in accurate, manageable, proof of concept models.

Parts and Pieces

The capability of the printer to create extremely detailed parts allows for the actuation of programming components which provide additional aid in visualizing parts and pieces of a building for design charette.

Scaled Iteration

In comparison to earlier printers, modern software is able to produce many prints in quick succession. This quality allows for rapid form exploration to streamline the iteration process.
