Helena, MT
Completed in 2007, this new facility required the removal of one building within a historic district and design approval by the county’s historic preservation commission. Federal grants from HOME and CDBG supplied $1 million of the $1.6 million project budget. Community support for the program and the new shelter are solid and the remaining funding was by smaller granting agencies and local contributions. The collaborative design sessions garnered input from staff, former residents, neighbors, and staff and directors from other community non-profits. The project received the 2007 Award of Distinction from the Lewis & Clark County Historic Preservation Commission for new construction within a historic district.
