Flathead Lake, MT
On the lakefront of Flathead Lake is Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp, which is situated on 250 acres. In the summer of 2004, the camp served over 2000 youth and adults with nearly 900 more on their off-site day camp program. The size of the program has stretched to the physical limits of the camp to adequately and to safely provide the needed services. This immediate need to improve the camping programs already in place prompted the board to hire Mosaic Architecture to facilitate a process of decision-making and master plan design to guide them into a capital appeal and building program. Mosaic facilitated nine workshops throughout western Montana, gathering input from all of the church clusters that support the Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp. Workshops were designed to get everyone involved in the design and problem-solving effort and to build excitement and ownership in the building projects. Workshops were 'hands-on' and invited participants to write and sketch their thoughts. Mosaic assessed all of the input from these workshops, and developed a draft master plan that was presented and positively received at the annual meeting held in October 2004. Currently, the process, decision-making, and meeting notes are all being summarized into a final master plan document. The document will explain the reasons for all the decisions that were made. Then it can become a living document with a life for those currently involved in the process. This document will be for those in the future as well who are trying to recall the direction set by those who preceded them.
